If you haven't already solved your rust problem, I have a great solution... Barkeepers Friend, it is sold in two forms powdered (gold can similar to comet or ajax cans) or liquid (tall white bottle navy blue cap). If you get the liquid put some baking soda over the rust and put the barkeepers friend on it to make a paste. If you'd prefer the powered version add just a bit of water to make a thick paste; let either one sit for a bit and then rub with a cloth and all should be well. It is may favorite cleaner.
