mysteries of motherhood...

one of the things that is hardest for me to figure out about my kids is, are they sick? does anyone else have this problem. as ethan is older it has become easier but espeically when he was a baby and now with Avery, i am sometimes at a loss. why does she cry like that, it sounds painful and different than her other cries. she doesn't have a fever, does her ear hurt? why don't we ask her? oh wait, she can't talk:) so that's a quandry and while i don't want to be one of "those" moms that take their kids in to the doctor because they have a hangnail, it is hard to tell! i have recently been in a quandry, wondering does her reflux medicine need to be increased because she weighs more...does she want to be unswaddled (kendall's favorite option because ethan stopped liking it around this age), do her ears hurt...why does she cry that painful cry....

more often than not with Avery, at least, part of the reason is...she has to poop. she is VERY gassy and sometimes it's hard for her to poop. so she had a big poop this morning and (cross your fingers) seems to feel better. she's such a happy, calm baby, now that the reflux medicine is doing its job, so when she cries like that, we know something is up. but sometimes...it could just be the hangnail couldn't it?

I think the thing I have realized is that just because you're a baby or a kid, you're not exempt from having like heat flashes and low blood sugar and clothing tags that itch and absolutely no motivation to do anything but sit (and maybe cry). Yesterday we all woke up for church and Dellah's in her bed all huddled up(she had been all stuffy and snotty for a couple of days) which is completely un-normal if there is any movement in the house whatsoever because she HAS to be there. Anyway, she was all mopey and diahrrea and she was like, "I want to go to church and eat my smarties like a snack".
I don't get it. Incessant crying when nothing's wrong, ready to eat smarties when she's sick...
this is why you have to be a parent eventually in this whole thing to reach perfection...the average person wants to throw up with frustration (but at least I would say,"I'm throwing up because I'm frustrated now")

Blame it on the poop. I'm serious. That and reflux were my two favorite excuses for why Mia screamed her head off most of her first year of life. Now, I still don't understand why she whines at me...oh yeah, she doesn't talk either. By the way, I read an article recently about staph, so taking your kid in because of a hangnail might not be so far off in the future. ;)

If you want a suggestion for the constipation which seems to be part and parcel with reflux, a medicine called Miralax is available over the counter now and is really good if used the right way! Talk to the pharmacist about the dose and then use it everyday, but double it on the seventh day (GI dr. says that just really cleans 'em out 'cause even if they poop everyday, you don't know if that's all they have in 'em). It's really safe and cleared both my kids up. Maybe TMI, but I've had some experience with this GI stuff.

I agree with Erin. Babies cry a lot.

PS: to answer the question...I ask that question all the time. Is Andie sick or just teething or just a stage? ahhhhh. It's so frustrating!! And although I'm not opposed to antibiotics, I really hate putting Andie on them! And going to the doctor and all that.
